Emergency Care vs. Normal Discomfort

At Junction Orthodontics, we understand the concerns that arise when dealing with orthodontic issues. Thankfully, genuine orthodontic emergencies requiring immediate attention are rare. You can typically remedy many orthodontic problems at home until a scheduled visit to our office.

However, if you cannot alleviate discomfort with your braces before your appointment, we encourage you to contact our office during working hours to secure an expedited appointment. In the rare event of a true orthodontic emergency, please leave a message at (314) 821-1101. We prioritize our patients' well-being and promise a prompt response.

Should you experience direct injuries to your mouth or teeth, irrespective of undergoing orthodontic treatment, it's essential to consult your primary care dentist promptly. Situations like a dislodged tooth, significant displacement, or fractures often require specialized treatment that your family dentist has the equipment to handle. If ever faced with a severe injury that poses a life-threatening risk, it's crucial to call 911 or head directly to the nearest emergency room.

Orthodontic concerns can be challenging, but to simplify the process, we've provided guidelines below to help you differentiate between an orthodontic emergency and a minor issue. Please explore, and call Junction Orthodontics today for a free consultation with an orthodontist in Crestwood, MO.

  • General Soreness from Braces

Especially after monthly adjustments, some soreness or small abrasions in the mouth are normal. Rinsing with a saltwater solution of eight ounces of warm water and one teaspoon of salt may help with the discomfort. Orthodontic wax can be used to cover the appliance in contact with the abrasion to help with the healing process.

  • Wire Poking

Due to regular usage, shifting of the appliances may occur. Eating unusually hard or sticky foods can cause or exacerbate this problem. If the excess wire is accessible, you may cut the extra wire with fingernail clippers at home.

If the wire is in the back of the mouth, have the patient place a bead of the provided orthodontic wax in the area that is causing discomfort. After making the patient comfortable, please call our office to schedule an appointment. We will happily see you and make everything comfortable for you again.

  • Loose Bracket

When a bracket becomes detached from the tooth, it typically will remain on the archwire. We can reattach the bracket at your next appointment if the bracket has completely come off.

Sometimes, the bracket can flip and become uncomfortable. If this occurs, you can flip the bracket back to its original position, making it a smooth surface again. If you cannot flip the bracket back, please call our office. In either case, we will re-attach the bracket at the patient’s next scheduled appointment.

  • Lost or Broken Retainer or Appliance

Please get in touch with our office if your retainer or appliance has become lost or broken. A new impression may be needed to make a new appliance. If you have a backup retainer, please wear this until you can come in for an appointment.

Should you have an orthodontic emergency after office hours, please call (314) 821-1101 and follow the instructions to leave a message for the person on call.
